In my time as a reporter and resident, I’ve discovered that basketball in the Bay State doesn’t get the coverage it deserves. When most people think of basketball in Massachusetts, they evoke memories of the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, and the history of the Boston Celtics.
But modern basketball culture is just as rich as ever. I set out to talk to some of the state’s most influential basketball figures to understand their stories and their perspectives on the local hoops scene.
Caroline Ducharme is arguably the brightest star in Massachusetts high school hoops. The Milton native won Gatorade’s 2019-20 Player of the Year award and locked down a commitment to the powerhouse University of Connecticut. Ducharme is only a rising senior, but she has already powered through two devastating injuries while growing her basketball career.
Ducharme talked to me about her college decision and her journey. She also reflected on Massachusetts’ place among basketball hubs and nominated some of the most underrated players that she has faced.
