On Thursday at 1:45 p.m., the Patriot announced in a statement that the women’s basketball playoffs would be cancelled — effective immediately. The decision comes in tandem with the nationwide shutdown of sports leagues and tournaments due to the spread of COVID-19.
“Given the rapidly changing environment regarding the ongoing spread of COVID-19 (2019 novel Coronavirus) the decision was made to protect the safety, health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, and campus communities,” the statement includes.
Boston University was slated to compete at 6:00 p.m. against Lehigh University in the Patriot League semifinals. BU women’s basketball finished as the second-ranked team in the conference and took down American University in the quarterfinal round on Monday.
That game against American will be the last varsity athletics event held on BU’s campus for the 2019-20 academic year.
