Women’s Basketball: Terriers Still Searching for First Victory, Host Struggling Marist

By: Alex Smith

Saturday afternoon’s contest between the Boston University Terriers (0-8) and the Marist Red Foxes (2-7) will feature a pair of teams looking for their first non-conference victories of the season.

The Terriers fell to URI in their last contest despite sharpshooter Sarah Hope’s career high 23 points. Hope earned her first start of the season and tied a school record with seven three-pointers, playing all 40 minutes for a BU team that struggled to score against a stout Rhode Island defense. She now leads the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game.

Meghan Green remains questionable with a foot injury, and the Terriers struggled to score inside the paint without her. A return to the lineup for Green would be a big boost for the Terriers.

The Red Foxes are led by Tori Jarosz, who is the reigning MAAC Player of the Week and was a member of last years’ all MAAC team. She averages a double double with 14.1 PPG and 10.2 RPG. She has amassed 20 blocks in Marist’s nine contests, and will be deputized by senior guard Sydney Coffey. The 6’0” Minnesotan contributes 11 PPG and leads the team with 31 assists, and the pair were selected to the MAAC preseason First Team.

Marist has won its last two contests against Quinnipiac and Fairfield in the opening MAAC contests, but went 0-7 in conference play. Despite Jarosz’s dominance on the glass, they have been out-rebounded by a -6.3 margin so far this season, so look for the Terriers to crash the glass as they try to get some momentum heading into conference play later this month.

Opponents also average 8.8 steals per game against the Red Foxes, and they turn the ball over nearly 16 times per contest. Look for coach Steding to try some different defensive looks as BU will likely look to get up and down the court against a team that averages 54 points per game.

Marist’s 0-7 record is in part due to its tough schedule. The Red Foxes faced four 2015 NCAA Tournament participants, including during a three game tournament in Florida. This will mark the 12th meeting between Marist and BU, with Marist leading the series 6-5.

The contest will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network, with Alex Smith and James Mattone on the call. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
